Sea Salt Can Be Used to Exfoliate Skin at Home

Believe it or not, sea salt has and is being used by Ford models like Katie (in the video) to exfoliate their skin. Katie admits to swimming in the Pacific to keep her skin healthy. Yes, we all know how sea water can sting on the skin especially if the sun hits it, but a little bit of sea salt may be all you need to get that exfoliating fix for your face and body skin.

If you can't afford to go to a beach, you can just buy sea salt. Ask your local grocery is they have some. This salt comes directly from the sea and is coarse. You really shouldn't use the salt directly on your skin. You have to dissolve the granules in water first to reduce their size and make them gentler for use on skin.

While taking a bath you can soak in this sea salt water and brush the fine salt on your skin. You can avoid getting the salty water in your eyes. You don't have to soak for too long, because your skin may go wrinkly like it's been in the water for too long. Listen to what model Katie has to say.

Grocery-shelf Facial Scrub Products Can Actually Produce Excellent Results to Your Skin

Grocery-shelf skin scrubs are the next-best-thing when it comes to pampering your skin with facials and mild dermabrasion treatments in spas. Yes, it's no longer like the old days when there's just the skin clinic to go to in order for you to take care of your skin and give it just the right glow to your satisfaction. It's too bad that spa treatments like these can still be heavy on the pocket (or does it make it lighter?).

Fortunately for you who like to give their skin a treat that there are now good products that you can just pick up from the grocery shelf to use on your own at home. The technology in maximizing the effects of these products has now matured to such a level that we can now benefit from spa-like results from the comfort of our own home. Best of all is that these products are much cheaper than if you have to go to a facial spa.

No one can really tell you which products to buy, but essentially, if you're not prone to contact allergies or if the choices are hypoallergenic, then it should be safe to use most of what's out there. But it pays to use brands that have a solid research and development history. Recommended products for daily use are the scrubs and mud packs that make your skin feel good and smoother by diminishing roughness and imperfections like discolorations, growths, and even pimples.

Fruit-based products are also good, but extracts like those from papaya can sometimes be too harsh for sensitive skin. Papaya extracts, while containing acids that can make your skin fresh by removing surface skin can be uncomfortable and may result in itchy red patches if used too often. If you choose to use such products, you should do so sparingly. You can see for yourself how they work when your skin turns reddish-raw and sensitive. Because of these effects, you should avoid getting too much of them around your eyes and corners of your mouth.

One product that gives excellent results for the typical person is the Nu Skin facial scrub. The Nu Skin facial scrub (left) allows regular users to get a healthy, ruddy facial skin yet is mild enough and refreshing for frequent use. It doesn't damage skin and helps with sun-exposed problem areas that tend to become course due to environmental exposure. It's also perfect for men who wish to keep a healthy-looking face without the hassles.

Overall, regular use of these grocery shelf face-scrubbing and skin exfoliating products will definitely make a difference in your skin without the hassles and make your skin look and feel like a celebrity's.

How To Improve Skin Texture With Exfoliation

by Jack Prime

Exfoliation is the removal of dead surface skin cells (flakes) from the skin.

It is one of the most important skin-care procedures and one of the least practiced. The skin's texture and contour are both improved; the thinned skin feels smoother, appears more translucent and has a lighter and more uniform colour tone.

Pores look smaller and an additional benefit is that the outer layer is more easily moisturized after the dry hard surface cells are removed.

Slough-off products can be lotions, gels or creams, sometimes with visible abrasive ingredients like grains. Some astringents act as very mild exfoliators.

Young skin may be thinned simply by rubbing with a rough facecloth wrung out in lukewarm water.

Older skin requires heavier thinning, using a preparation and a complexion brush, sponge or textured cloth. It is really a mild peel and should be done once a week, sometimes twice if skin looks scaly. Deep peels are drastic remedies to get rid of lines and blemishes; they are done by physicians or specialized cosmetologists.

The Exfoliation Procedure

Thinning is done immediately after cleansing.

Apply preparation according to instructions.

Remove by wiping or brushing off, using circular movements for forehead, chin and cheeks, vertical movements for nose, facial borders and neck; use water if necessary to clear skin.

Moisturize immediately.

Guard against early sun exposure.

Natural Exfoliation Aids

Sprinkle ordinary salt on a wet facecloth; rub face lightly, rinse away, not for delicate skin.

Papaya mint tea removes skin debris; pour 2 cups of boiling water on 2 tea bags, steep for a few minutes; soak a facecloth in the tea, wring out, apply to the face holding cloth against skin.

The tea must be hot to be effective; keep heating, and renewing cloth. Continue for 15 minutes.

The Science of Beauty in the Bath - Application of Body Scrubs and Soaps

by Dee Braun

Using specially formulated body scrubs and soaps is one way to deal with several skin and body conditions. Be sure to stay away from scrubs and soaps which contain harsh chemicals, acids or mineral oil (also called parafin) as these can be drying and even damaging to your skin.

Making your own scrubs and soaps is another option which doesn't have to be complicated or difficult. I've included some terrific, simple recipes here for you to try. A little extra TLC and time in the bath can not only improve the look and health of your skin, it can also help to reduce stress and improve your overall health.

Body scrubs and special soaps can be used for:

1. Goosebumps

2. Blackheads

3. Skin that needs revitalizing

4. Addressing problems such as dry skin or cellulite

The process is simple and choices are available to improve the look and feel of your body's skin.

a. Scrub down with soap and water using the bath mitt, loofah or brush.

b. Rub all over with sea salt as you stand in the bath.

c. Rub all over with sugar using your soap lather.

d. Fill a muslin bag with ground oats/bran from a health food store and scrub with that.

The use of a loofah, hemp glove, long-backed bristle brush is beneficial at all times, but is especially important is the person is on a strict diet or undertaking a fast. Under these circumstances the body is throwing off poisons rapidly, and these need to be scrubbed off the skin.

The Use of Soap

Even dermatologists are unable to reach agreement on as to whether soap is positively good or bad for the skin. The theory that it is bad is based on the fact that skin is naturally slightly acid, while soap is mostly alkaline. Hence the soap temporarily destroys the skins' acid mantle. However, as the balance is restored in one to three hours, the damage is not permanent.

The `anti-soap` brigade claims that the drying effect of soap is cumulative; years of washing will take their toll in the form of skin that is prematurely dried or cracked. Certainly, students will feel the drying effect of soap on their skin; it is this very feeling that makes some women say that they feel `clean`, but often this means that soap has been left on the skin which has not been adequately rinsed and dried off.

You should be aware that although nowadays most soaps contain moisturizers such as cold cream to mitigate the drying effect, this does not alter their alkalinity. Most people will cause little harm to their skin by using soap. It is only those who have particularly dry or sensitive skin who should use the special acid-balanced soaps, which are not strictly soaps at all, they are more aptly called cleansers.

Natural Body Cleanser, Scrub and Soap Recipes

Homemade Sea Salt Exfoliator

Mix 1/8 cup of Olive Oil and 1 heaping tablespoon of sea salt

Use on knees and elbows in the shower and rinse off. Pat dry with a soft towel.

Honey Scrub

To make a good exfoliating scrub, mix a tsp. of warm runny honey with 1 tbsp. milk. Add sugar until you get it to a grainy consistency.

Use immediately.

Liquid Lavender Soap

Put 6 tbsp. of grated castile Soap and some water in a heatproof bowl and place over a saucepan of boiling water. When the Soap has melted, stir in 5 tbsp glycerin. Remove from heat and stir in 4 drops of Lavender oil.

If desired, stir in a few drops of natural food coloring to color the Soap. When cool, pour into clean bottles and seal with corks.

Cool Shower Gel

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup herbal shampoo (look for one that is detergent-free; avoid labels that list any variation of "sodium lauryl Sulfate")
  • 1/4 to 3/4 cup water
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 8 drops Peppermint Essential Oil
  • 2 tablespoons Aloe Vera gel
  • Blend all the ingredients thoroughly, adjusting the amount of water to get the desired consistency.
  • Pour into a bottle or jar.
  • Place a dab of this cooling gel in your hand to use instead of Soap.

Helpful Hints:

Formula may be doubled or tripled to make extra for gifts.

And please be sure to use pure Peppermint Essential Oil, not a fragrance oil.

Oatmeal Bath Gel

To make a creamy bath gel, mix 1/4 cup dry oatmeal and 1 tsp. honey with enough milk to make it a paste. Put in the microwave for a few seconds to warm up and then use.

Almond Mayonnaise Scrub

(for very dry skin)

  • 1/4 cup almonds
  • 1/8 teaspoon mayonnaise

Grind almonds in blender until they form a meal. Whirl in mayonnaise. Vinegar-Rinse your skin. Rub in Scrub gently and thoroughly. Leave on skin for about 10 minutes. Rinse off and follow with Vinegar Rinse.

Basic Body Butter Lotion Bar

Ingredients:

  • 1 Part Beeswax
  • 1 Part Cocoa OR Shea Butter
  • 1 Part Carrier Oil
  • 1 Part Skin-Safe Fragrance or Essential Oil

Directions

* Do not use both Cocoa Butter & Shea. Cocoa Butter will make a slightly harder bar, Shea Butter will make a slightly softer bar.

*Add Beeswax, Carrier Oil of choice and Butter of choice to a microwave safe container. A Pyrex Measuring Glass works best for cleanup purposes. Melt in 20 second increments until all is melted. Stir well. Add Fragrance of Essential Oil, and stir well. Pour in a Melt & Pour Soap mold, Push Up Stick, or Deodorant Container and let harden overnight.

* This recipe can also be used for Lip Balm, by using a Skin-Safe Flavor Oil instead of the Fragrance of Essential Oil.

Easy Sugar Scrubs

You'll need a small to medium jar, white or brown sugar to fill it near the top, and enough oil to add so the mixture is moist. You can use olive, sweet Almond, or vegetable oil. At this point you can add a 1/2 tsp. of an Essential Oil or blend of oils. Lavender, Rose Geranium, or Rose mixed with Rosemary, Lemon or Orange is nice.

If you mix oils they should all total about 1/2 tsp.-not a 1/2 tsp. each. Mix all with a spoon in the jar, cover with the lid and allow to sit at least overnight. The mixture should look "oily" and moistened. If it doesn't, add more oil.

To use: Scoop a small amount on to your hand and rub your hands and fingers gently with the scrub, not too hard. Rinse with warm water and pat dry. This leaves your hands soft, and is great after gardening!

Skin Exfoliation Recipe for Acne Treatment

by Dr. Carlo Rinaudo

While most people know about cleaning, moisturizing and even sunscreen, exfoliation seems to be an overlooked regimen in skin care at home.

Exfoliation is the skin's natural process of removing dead skin cells to reveal the healthy, glowing fresh skin cells beneath. The exterior skin cells become dry, scaly and non-functional as they die.

As we age the process of exfoliation through begins to slow. By the time we reach the ripe old age of 25 that process has doubled in time. What once took 30 days now takes 60.

So the new skin cells that were revealed after 30 days when we were 20 now takes 60 days to come to the surface, making our faces duller, dryer and definitely looking our age.

But we have options to improve the natural process by using an exfoliation to help the skin shed the dead cells.

You can choose to purchase an exfoliant or make one at home. Some great products you can include in an exfoliant are ground oats, milled flax seed, cornmeal, yogurt, honey or buttermilk. A mix of yogurt and ground oats is actually a mix of chemical and abrasive exfoliant because the ground oats are abrasive and the yogurt is chemical (lactic acid in the yogurt).

  • Mixing oatmeal, ½ cup milk and 1 tsp of honey to make a paste.
  • Apply this to your face and let it dry.
  • Rub this off gently with a warm wet washcloth.

Your hands will love-
  • ½ cup of granulated sugar,
  • 2 tablespoons of apricot oil,
  • the juice of ½ lemon or 3 drops of lemon essential oil.
  • Combine these and apply them immediately to your hands.
  • Rub this for a minute and then rinse with warm water and moisturizer. Sugar is an excellent exfoliator and apricot oil is a natural lubricant.

Make your feet sing with this nuts scrub.
  • ½ cup shelled walnuts,
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil,
  • 1 tablespoon of castor oil,
  • 1 teaspoon of honey and
  • 1-2 drops of your favorite essential oil.
  • Blend the nuts in a blender until a fine powder; add the rest of the ingredients to make a paste.
  • Rub your feet with this vigorously and rinse with warm water. This is wonderful when used twice weekly.
